Production

Biochar is produced by heating organic matter in an oxygen-free environment, removing volatile gasses and leaving an extremely porous carbon.

Takesumi is a premium biochar produced using perfected ancient techniques and from the finest quality materials. Using a process called pyrolisis, premium MengZong bamboo is carbonized at temperatures reaching 700°C to create an incredibly porous and stable soil improver.

To ensure the finest quality product Takesumi is made exclusively from Meng Zong bamboo from a single sustainable production base. Products are produced with ISO9001 international quality system certification standards and organic products and production processing certification.

Why Bamboo?

Takesumi Bamboo Biochar is made exclusively from MengZong bamboo known for its natural strength and superior mineral uptake. For extra quality, only bamboo culms, which are 5 years old, are used. This guarantees a consistency that biochars made from other crops cannot. Bamboo produces one of the most porous forms of carbon with an extremely uniform structure. The surface area of Takesumi Bamboo Biochar is greater than 350 square metres per gram.  This is 3-5 times greater than most Biochars made from other materials.

Our bamboo is grown sustainably and is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth so can be forested very efficiently. It does not require pesticides or fertilisers so the production base promotes biodiversity. Each acre of bamboo production base removes 40 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

History

Documented use of bamboo biochar dates back to Ming Dynasty Oriental Asia, around 1486 AD. South American discoveries also confirm that biochars  were in use hundreds of years ago by the worlds most advanced civilisations. The techniques used by the ancients of South America were lost over time but in Asia knowledge of biochar was passed down the generations and has been in continual use for centuries.  As testament to biochar’s versatility it has been used over the centuries for crop cultivation, water purifation, medicine, food preservation and even mumification.

Looking to the past to solve today’s problems

Takesumi bamboo biochar represents an opportunity to employ ancient techniques to build healthier and more fertile gardens for the future. All this can be achieved without the use of chemicals or over intensive modern methods whilst allowing gardeners to do their bit to protect the environment.

As we begin to understand more about this traditional technology academics and scientists continue to reafirm its potential to contribute to a brighter future. Biochar technology is being used all over the world to revitalize depleted soils and help growers get the most from the earth in ways that help the environment.
